FG to Launch Bidding for MRO Establishment

FG to commence Bidding for MRO Establishment, The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced plans to begin the bidding process for establishing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities in the country.

Recognizing the substantial financial investment required, Keyamo emphasized the need for private sector involvement, stating that the Federal Government alone cannot fund such a capital-intensive project.

Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities are essential for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of aircraft. Their primary purposes include:

Maintenance: Regular inspections and servicing to keep aircraft in optimal condition.

Repair: Fixing any issues or damage that may occur during operation.

Overhaul: Comprehensive checks and refurbishments to extend the lifespan of aircraft components.

These facilities help reduce downtime, enhance safety, and ensure compliance with aviation regulations. They also play a crucial role in minimizing the need for costly repairs by addressing issues early.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance aviation infrastructure and reduce the reliance on foreign MRO services. Keyamo revealed that the project would be pursued through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with many proposals already under consideration.

The department overseeing this initiative is currently finalizing the necessary bureaucratic processes. The government aims to start soliciting bids this year, with the project open to competitive bidding to ensure transparency and efficiency in the selection process.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, clarified that the establishment of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities would not be carried out on a state-by-state basis. “It is not done on a state-by-state basis,” he confirmed.

Two weeks ago, Keyamo projected that Nigeria could generate over $2 billion annually by establishing major MRO facilities within the country. He explained that this would also save Nigerian airlines a similar amount, which is currently spent on aircraft maintenance abroad.

Keyamo also mentioned that he had initiated discussions with potential investors interested in partnering with the Federal Government to bring this project to fruition. He reiterated that such a significant venture could only be realized through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) due to the considerable financial and technical requirements.

Highlighting the growing interest from international investors, Keyamo expressed optimism about the project’s potential to enhance the local aviation industry. “Some overseas investors are already showing interest, particularly in the MROs,” he noted. “This is crucial for improving our local aviation sector. We need to bring in the MROs.”

Keyamo emphasized the importance of involving local financiers, banks, and businessmen in the project, assuring them that foreign investment would not exclude them from opportunities. “We will soon advertise and call for partnerships.

That is the only way forward. We need to involve those with financial resources. Local businessmen, banks, and financial institutions should not worry that foreigners are coming to take over their business,” he elaborated.
