The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) announced that Nigeria handles over six million tonnes of the 17 million tonnes of annual West African freight originating from Antwerp, making it the largest recipient of such freight in the region.
Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, the Managing Director of NPA, shared this information during a meeting with Pieter Leenknegt, the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria.
The meeting underscored NPA’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations aimed at enhancing the efficiency of Nigerian seaports and boosting trade volumes between Nigeria and Belgium.
Dantsoho highlighted that the port of Antwerp is a key maritime hub in Europe, particularly for Africa, due to its extensive supply chain connections.
He also emphasized that among all ports in Northwest Europe, Antwerp has the highest number of direct services to West Africa.
He further noted that the NPA, with support from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, is poised to increase Nigeria’s share in the trade statistics of West and Central Africa.
Dantsoho also expressed the agency’s intention to harness the technical expertise of the Port of Antwerp to improve port operations in Nigeria.
